New Zealand's prime minster-elect Jacinda Ardern and US president Donald Trump "pledged to continue close cooperation" during their Labour Day phone call, according to a statement by the White House Press Office.

Released last night after Mr Trump's congratulatory phone call to Ms Ardern, the "two leaders underscored the importance of the bilateral partnership between the United States and New Zealand", the statement said.

The pair also "pledged to continue close cooperation on the many priorities the two countries share".

Yesterday, Ms Ardern said "the President was genuinely interested in our election, and spoke about the coverage it had received in Washington DC".

"We are likely to meet at APEC, where I look forward to carrying on talks around our role in the Asia Pacific region, and our commitment to a strong relationship with the United States," she said.

"The President also asked that I pass on his warm regards to the people of New Zealand."

Ms Ardern is set to release the parliamentary portfolios given to the selected members of Labour, NZ First and the Green Party.
