Tributes flow after French fiancé of Kiwi champion triathlete dies

Leading Kiwi triathletes are amongst those who have paid tribute to French triathlete Laurent Vidal, fiancé of Kiwi champion and Olympian Andrea Hewitt, who died of a heart attack aged 31.

The French triathlon federation said yesterday that Vidal died overnight at his home in southern France. An emergency response team was immediately called on site but could not resuscitate him.

Some leading New Zealand athletes have offered thier condalences to Hewitt and the Vidal family, including Terenzo Bozzone, Nick Willis and Cameron Brown.

He previously suffered a serious heart attack in a swimming pool during training and was narrowly revived.

He was placed in an induced coma before recovering, but was forced to retire from the sport.

He was a prolific and successful triathlete, becoming the French champion three times and competing at two Olympic Games.

French President Francois Hollande offered his condolences to Vidal's family and paid tribute to "a great champion."

Mr Vidal was the fiance and coach of New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt, herself a gold medallist in the sport.
