The transgender community want answers following the alleged rape of a transgender woman prisoner at Wiri Prison in Auckland.
The prisoner was reportedly removed from segregation at the Serco-run prison on Wednesday before being repeatedly raped when she was locked up with a male cellmate.
Agender spokesperson Lexie Matheson says the organisation has fought for prisons to acknowledge transgender for a long time.
“We’re acknowledged everywhere else in the world," she said.
“Everywhere else in New Zealand it’s recognised that we have the same rights to safety as anybody else and prisons are no different.”
The prisoner is currently in a health unit at the prison.
The Corrections Department says a number of investigations are underway following a string of alleged assaults at Serco prisons.
