A 60-year-old man who failed to return from a tramping trip in the Tararua Ranges has been found alive, police say.
The man had gone on a four-day tramping trip to the Tararua Ranges on 31 January but failed to return home on Sunday.
He was located at 6:30am today by a local helicopter using thermal imaging and then transported to Masterton Hospital where he is being treated for a suspected broken leg, police say.
The New Zealand Defence Force joined the search for the missing man - a Royal New Zealand Air Force NH90 helicopter flew search and rescue personnel to the Tararuas yesterday following a request from the New Zealand Police.
Search teams had been conducting a ground search since Tuesday morning, checking tracks and huts.
