An elderly Tauranga woman with dementia has been rescued after a tracking pendant alerted police to her location.

The 79-year-old was lucky to to be found after she wandered away from home on Wednesday evening.

She was wearing a tracking pendant - supplied by Tauranga Land Search and Rescue after she had previously gone missing - which meant the search team could narrow down her location in Yatton Park.

Police say it took some time to track her down as she was in dense bush.

She had gone as far as she could and lay down, says Senior Sergeant Craig Madden.

He believed they would not have found her without her tracking device.

"I'm confident that without the pendant she would've spent a very uncomfortable night in the bush and I wouldn't like to say what the outcome of that could've been."
