Two tourists were forced to hand over cash, a cellphone and luggage to robbers who stopped their vehicle and threatened them near Turangi in the central North Island.

Police are appealing for information about the aggravated robbery at about 4.30pm yesterday on Atirau Road, near the Turangi Golf Course.

The two male tourists had their vehicle stopped and were threatened by three male offenders, police said in a statement this afternoon.

The tourists' vehicle was searched and they were forced to hand over cash, a cell phone and luggage.

The offenders are described as Maori, two of whom had facial tattoos, and were said to be driving an older style red vehicle.

“Turangi is a proud community that welcomes and relies on tourism,” said Detective Sergeant Andy Livingstone of Taupo Police.

“Members of the community who are aware of this robbery are upset and very disappointed that this has happened," he said.

Police are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has knowledge about what happened and those involved, Mr Livingstone said.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Livingstone on (07) 377 9331.

Police say information can be given in confidence if required.
