Tornado strikes Ohope in Bay of Plenty leaving at least six properties damaged

A tornado has ripped through Ohope in the Bay of Plenty town of Whakatane this afternoon, damaging at least six properties.

The incident occurred just after 5.30pm this evening, Ohope resident Norman Murray told 1 NEWS.

Mr Murray says the massive waterspout came out of nowhere.

"We all ran downstairs and hid in the bathroom," he said.

"I've never seen anything like that in my life."

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1 NEWS at least least six properties were damaged.

Rooves have been torn off homes and windows have been smashed.

There are no reports of any injuries at this stage.
