Too soon to tell if Northland death is suspicious after body found in burning car — police

The grisly discovery was made on the evening of April 13.

A police scene examination has been completed at a beach near Kerikeri, Northland after a body was found inside a burning car.

Emergency services were called to the end of Wharau Road at around 7pm yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Fouhy says the station wagon was well involved in flames and had spread to vegetation when authorities arrived.

Police say it’s too soon to know whether the incident is suspicious and they are treating it as an unexplained death.

The incident happened in an area frequented by families and is a popular fishing spot.

A post mortem is due to be carried out tomorrow and formal identification procedures are underway.
