Toilet paper company fined $360k after worker caught in rollers

Cottonsoft has been fined $315,000, plus reparations of $45,000, after a worker was seriously injured in an incident involving inadequately guarded machinery.

The toilet paper manufacturer was sentenced in the Manukau District Court today for the January 2017 incident, which saw the employee receive crush injuries and rib fractures after being caught in rollers.

He also sustained "de-gloving" injuries and lacerations to his arms, as well as long-term side effects requiring further surgery, WorkSafe said in a statement.

A WorkSafe investigation into the incident found that the guarding on the machinery had departed significantly from current industry standards and that, while the risks had been identified in previous risk assessments, no long-term or interim solutions had been put in place.
