Timaru man prints custom 50km stickers for wheelie bin in last-ditch effort to slow speeding motorists

April 6, 2018

A Timaru local has had custom stickers printed up to remind motorists not to speed along his suburban street.

Jim Morton told The Timaru Herald that motorists travelling south on the highway sometimes use Acacia Drive as a bypass to beat traffic - and don't lower their speed.

Acacia drive runs parallel to the 100km/h State Highway 1 for about 1km, and Mr Morton said its only a matter of time before someone is killed.

Mr Morton says he's affixed the stickers to his letterbox and wheelie bin.

"You get some drivers who use this street as a short-cut and forget that there is a 50kmh speed limit," Mr Morton said.

"It's been a problem for a long time.

"We've got to sort out the attitude that all rural roads are instantly 100km/h ... many drivers don't think about the conditions or the actual speed limit, they just drive really fast."
