A series of troughs is forecast to bring thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail to a large part of the country today from Auckland down to Nelson and Buller.
The risk of thunderstorms is considered high in inland parts of Hawke's Bay and Gisborne as well as the eastern ranges of Taihape, Taupo and Bay of Plenty during the afternoon and early evening.
These storms could become severe, producing localised downpours of over 25mm per hour, and also hail of 10mm to 20mm diameter or possibly larger.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms over much of the North Island from northern Wairarapa and Manawatu up to southern Northland and also in Nelson and inland Buller during the afternoon.
This morning, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in Wairarapa, the Tararua District and in the southeast corner of Hawke's Bay.
Any thunderstorms are expected to come with heavy rain of 10mm to 20mm per hour and hail of 5mm to 15mm.
There is also a broader low risk of thunderstorms over remaining parts of the North Island and northern South Island during the afternoon and early evening.
