Thunderstorms and hail possible this morning in parts of Auckland, Wellington and upper South Island, MetService says

Breakfast’s Matty McLean delivers the latest forecast, and for many, it’s not looking that flash.

MetService says thunderstorms are likely across large parts of the North Island today, as well as near the top end of the South Island.

This morning, there is a moderate chance of thunderstorms producing hail and rain of 10-20mm per hour in Northland, western Auckland, Taranaki, the Kāpiti Coast, Wellington and Nelson.

A lesser chance of storms extends through to Coromandel, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, the central North Island, Manawatū, Marlborough and northern Westland.

This afternoon and evening, there will be a moderate risk of storms hitting Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki, the Kāpiti Coast, Wellington, Marlborough and Nelson/Tasman.

In Taranaki and Waikato, those storms could bring strong wind gusts of up to 100km/h, MetService says.

A number of homes were damaged by tornadoes yesterday in Ohope in the Bay of Plenty and in New Plymouth.

A Severe Weather Watch is in place for Nelson west of Motueka and the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges, where heavy rain is expected today.

Road Snow warnings are in place for Lewis Pass (SH7) and Lindis Pass (SH8).
