Thunder, rain and wind forecast to hit parts of the North Island today

April 29, 2018

More wet weather is expected for much of the country with a Heavy Rain Warning in place for the Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty, Bay of Plenty east of Te Kaha and Gisborne north of Tokomaru Bay, as well as areas of the South Island.

MetService say the heaviest falls are expected in the Coromandel Peninsula as a further 90 to 120mm could accumulate, in addition to what has already fallen.

Heavy rain is also forecast with warnings in place for the Coromandel Peninsula until 9am, Bay of Plenty until 4pm, Canterbury until 6pm, and Nelson and Marlborough until 9pm today.

The heavy rain warning for Auckland and Westland have been lifted but further localised heavy showers are possible.

A Severe Thunderstorm watch has also been issued over Bay of Plenty, Coromandel Peninsula and Rotorua this morning.

The storm downpours are expected to bring localised downpours of 25 to 40mm per hour and possibly more.

"Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and flash flooding, slips and hazardous driving conditions," MetService warned.

Strong winds are likely to reach up to 110km/h or stronger for these places.

The poor weather is caused by an unstable low pressure system moving on the the country off the north Tasman Sea, and MetService says it has been particularly difficult to forecast.
