Three tornadoes rip through North Island locations causing damage

One unoccupied house was completely destroyed and five others were badly damaged in the incident.

Three tornadoes have hit parts of the North Island today (two in Taranaki and one at National Park Village) as severe weather wreaks havoc around New Zealand.

Two tornadoes have gone through the Taranaki town of Rahotu today.

Kent Helms, station manager at Rahotu Fire Station confirmed the news to 1 NEWS.

The tornadoes have caused extensive damage to power networks and buildings.

He says parts of homes have blown away.

The third tornado hit National Park Village in the Ruapehu District.

In a statement Ruapehu District Council's chief executive Clive Manley says there's "widespread reports of damage including to houses having lost roofs".
