Three men, some in masks, attack Gisborne man with knives during morning walk

A 41-year-old man on a morning walk in Gisborne yesterday was brutally attacked, receiving injuries including facial injuries, stab wounds and lacerations to his body.

The man was admitted to Gisborne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses of the attack, which took place on Valley Road between James Street and Gordon Street yesterday between 6am and 6.30am.

The three attackers are described as Māori males in their 20s.

One was clean-shaven with short hair and a black hooded jersey. The other two were wearing black clothing and had their faces covered.

The attackers were on foot and were last seen walking either down Gordon Street toward Winter Street, or Ormond Road toward Winter Street, Detective Sergeant Danny Kirk said in a statement.

"An unprovoked attack of this nature is of serious concern to police," Mr Kirk said.
