Three little blue penguins stolen from nests in Napier

February 8, 2019

Police are appealing for information after three little blue penguins were stolen from their nests in Napier last month.

The penguins were taken from their nests in Perfume Point, in Ahurihuri, at around 10.30pm on January 24, Sergeant Craig Vining said.

One of the three penguins was killed in the process, with the body left on the beach.

Two groups are possibly involved in the theft, Mr Vining said, including two men and an older woman, and several teenagers.

The woman was described as having long hair and a large build.

One of the teenagers was described as having a large build and wearing a white t-shirt.

Both groups are believed to be of Pacific Island descent.

Police say the alleged offenders used a torch and a fishing-style gaff, with a hook on one end, to take the penguins from their nests.

The penguins were then wrapped in towels before the group left the scene in a white, older-style four-door car in fairly rough condition, Mr Vining said.

Some of the group may have fished in the area before, or have ties to the Ahurihuri region, police say.

Anyone with information in relation to the incident can contact Napier police on (06) 831 0700, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
