Thousands of Bay of Plenty homes still without power in the wake of Cyclone Cook

Thousands of homes across the North Island remain without power as electricity providers work to fix the damage done by ex-tropical Cyclone Cook.

The storm left power outages, downed trees and blocked roads, but evacuees have returned home.

In Bay of Plenty, 3,500 homes remain without power in Whakatane and Opotiki.

"Unfortunately, given the widespread damage caused, customers should plan to be without power for up to three days," Horizon Energy said in a statement.

"The weather forecast is predicting further rain for the district over the coming days. This may result in further outages and delays in restoring supplies," it warned.

In Gisborne, Eastland said in a statement last night that power had been restored to most customers, but around 350 homes will remain without power for another one or two days.

"Crews will continue restoration work early in the morning, with priority being given to repairing faults that have the most significant effect on the most customers," Eastland network said.
