Morwenna Fyfe said what happened early this morning was 'pretty scary'.

A witness has described hearing a terrible crash and seeing people treated by emergency services staff following a fatal crash in Auckland overnight.

Five people were in the silver VW Golf which failed to stop for Police about 1.08am.

The driver tried to overtake another vehicle while being pursued by Police on St Lukes Road before crashing into a tree.

The two people who died were passengers in the back.

Witness Morwenna Fyfe said the crash was so loud it seemed like it was "right outside my window".

"I got up to look out the window and I just saw all the Police cars," she said.

"It was pretty scary ... there were around 12-15 police cars and 4-5 ambulances ... it was just crazy seeing people everywhere.

"I saw two people get carried off into the ambulance at first, and then I saw them trying to resuscitate one person for a while."

Detective Inspector Scott Beard this morning told reporters that "we need to stop people fleeing from police".

"It's a risk to our community, it's a risk to the driver, to the passengers and to police staff," he said.

Two passengers died in a crash in Auckland early this morning.

"We now have two families who have suffered the tragedy of losing loved ones."

He went on to say that for the officers who attended the crash "it is difficult for them as well".

He said it was too early to say whether alcohol was involved in the crash.

The process of identifying the two victims of the crash was ongoing.

There is no indication the car was stolen. It is believed the people in the car were friends.
