'I think we'll have a government before the potato shortage is resolved' - English finds something to laugh about

October 16, 2017

'I'll stick to the bit we can sort out, which is the government,' said the National Party leader.

New Zealand's potato shortage is not a problem National leader Bill English has to face, he told TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning whilst breaking into laughter.

"I think we'll have a government before the potato shortage is resolved," he said.

"I'll stick to the bit we can sort out, which is the government, and we’ll let the potato growers stick to producing a few more potatoes sooner."

A nation-wide potato shortage caused by wet weather will have a serious impact on the availability of potato chips in NZ supermarkets.

Brent Wilcox from the Growers Association told 1 NEWS wet weather has drowned a lot of potatoes and many others haven't stored so well.

Mr Wilcox said processing supply has been hit quite badly.

A spokeswoman for Foodstuffs said some of their potato chip suppliers were struggling to meet demand due to weather-related crop shortages.

"We are working closely with our suppliers to manage supply as much as possible," she said.

"It is anticipated new season crops will be harvested in the next few weeks so supply is likely to settle down then."
