'Things here are heating up' - Corin Dann in midst of anti-Trump protesters rally in Manila

1 NEWS political editor Corin Dann reports from a student protest coinciding with the US president's attendance at the ASEAN summit.

A large protest rally has been staged on the streets of the Philippines capital, Manila, against the visit by US President Donald Trump for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

1 NEWS political editor Corin Dann, reporting from the protest, says left wing student protesters are keen to voice their concerns about Mr Trump coming to the ASEAN meeting.

"Further up the street, way up behind me, there are rows and rows of police officers in full riot gear," Dann said in a Facebook video from the scene.

He said the police had water cannons out yesterday with protesters on the streets, and it's highly likely they'll have more of them again today.

"So things here are heating up. Not everyone is happy about Donald Trump coming here and these protesters really want to make their presence felt," Dann said.

Leaders from across Asia last night joined President Trump at a gala dinner in the Philippines' capital.

Leaders, including New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, are also attending the East Asia Summit, which coincides with the larger ASEAN meeting this week.
