'They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish' - US teacher causes students to walk out of class after 'racist' comment

October 16, 2017

A US high school teacher has outraged a handful of her students, leading them to walk out of class, when she told them US soldiers were fighting for their right to speak "American" not "Spanish".

The teacher made the comments after she had allegedly asked some students whispering in Spanish to stop a number of times, PIX11 reported.

"Men and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish. They are fighting for your right to speak American," the teacher can be heard saying.

Following the comment, three students can be seen immediately getting up out of their seats and leaving the class.

"You're being racist. I know how to speak English," one student can be heard saying in the footage.

The controversial incident at New Jersey's Cliffside Park High School was captured in a Snapchat video and has been shared on social media more than 20,000 times.

Cliffside Park High School is located within a diverse community in New Jersey with a large Spanish speaking population.

Reaction from students at the school online have been varied, with some calling for her resignation for the "discriminatory" and "bellitiling" behaviour.

However, other students have come to her defence saying she is a "great teacher" and a "wonderful person".
