'There's an enormous need' – NZ following 'diplomatic channels' on Myanmar crisis

More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since fighting broke out in the region.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is following "diplomatic channels" to tackle the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled from Rakhine state to Bangladesh to escape violence and persecution in the largely-Buddhist country.

"I'd like to think that we would be in a role to be supportive in finding resolution but there's a bit of work to be done there," Ms Ardern said.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced $2.5 million in further funding, bringing the total amount provided by New Zealand to $4 million.
