'Thank you New Zealand' - Kaikoura's kids delighted by Santa's early delivery

December 19, 2016

New Zealanders have shown the quake hit town that they are not being forgotten at a very trying time of year for many.

For the kids of Kaikoura, Santa came a little early this year, but with roads blocked and chimneys down, earlier is better than not at all.

More than 4000 gifts were donated for youngsters in the quake hit town, meaning there is more than enough to go around, and extra for kids in places like Waiau and Cheviot, which have also seen more than their fair share of upheaval.

Today's efforts were the culmination of a collaboration by volunteers across the country.

"It was heartwarming to think people spent time and money to give gifts to these people," said organiser Mia Ormsby of Christchurch's Casebrook Intermediate.

Among the haul were Lego and sports gear, but regardless, they all brought smiles to the faces of children and their parents.

"Thank you New Zealand," said one happy group.
