Texts between Carol Hirschfeld and Clare Curran show meeting between RNZ staffer and minister pre-arranged

March 28, 2018

RNZ heads earlier defended a meeting between manager Carol Hirschfeld and the Broadcasting Minister.

Text messages between Broadcasting Minister Clare Curran and RNZ's senior manager Carol Hirschfeld have been released today by the minister.

They outline the events leading up to the meeting which saw Ms Hirschfeld hand in her resignation yesterday.

The messages, released under the Official Information Act, show the pair arranging a meeting in early November last year.

The texts reveal conflicting schedules meant they weren't able to meet until early December at a cafe in Wellington.

Speaking from Parliament today, Ms Curran said she had been naive over the circumstances surrounding what she thought was just an informal catchup with the RNZ staffer.

"In hindsight and now that I understand RNZ has clear policies around meeting with Ministers that I wasn't aware of at the time I would not have that meeting again.

"It may have been naive but I was unaware of that."

Originally Ms Hirschfeld said the meeting with the Minister was accidental, the texts clearly show otherwise and the RNZ manager resigned after acknowledging the discrepancy in her original account of events.

However Ms Curran says she will not be stepping down over the meeting, saying yesterday: "At the time no, I didn't believe it (the meeting) was inappropriate, from my perspective no".

She went on to say: "It was not a secret meeting, it was held in one of the busiest cafe's in Wellington, it was as I believed at the time an informal catchup meeting.

"In hindsight and now that I understand that RNZ has clear policies around meeting with Ministers that I wasn't aware of at the time. I would not have that meeting again."

When questioned in Parliament's question time about the meeting last year Ms Curran also claimed it was unofficial despite it being pre-arranged. Ms Curran corrected this at a later date in Parliament.
