Ten-month-old remains critical after deadly Taupo crash kills four, including mother

Six other people remain in hospital following the head-on smash.

A 10-month-old baby involved in the fatal crash in Taupo remains in a critical condition this morning following the crash on Tuesday which killed four people.

The infant was flown to Starship Hospital shortly after the crash, which happened about 3.30pm on Tuesday at the intersection of SH1 and Tutukau Rd, Oruanui, about 20km from Taupo.

Pesi Tuivai was killed in the horrific crash on her way back from being blessed at an Auckland church event.

A 42-year-old man is also in a critical condition at Waikato Hospital, while a 32-year-old woman is stable.

Three girls, aged 2, 3 and 17, as well as a 66-year-old woman, are all in a stable condition at Rotorua Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the fatal incident, while Road Policing Manager Steve Greally says more people are failing to wear a seat belt.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigation the cause of the head-on crash, and are asking anyone who may have witnessed it or who has further information to call Taupo Police on 07 378 6060.
