Temperatures reach below zero as South Island's cold snap continues

Temperatures in Christchurch and Queenstown dropped to 1C overnight.

It was a chilly beginning to the morning down in the South Island with many waking up to a frost.

St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes took the prize for coldest place in New Zealand this morning starting the day at -4.3 degrees.

Blenheim also had a nippy start on -1.2 degrees while Christchurch and Queenstown were sitting at 1 degree.

MetService says sleety showers are expected to continue today for mid-Canterbury.

NZTA is warning motorists to look out for and be aware of snow clearing equipment when travelling through the alpine passes and some major state highways down south today.

A warning has been put in place for SH94 Te Anau to Milford Sound.

Despite the chill of winter creeping in this week, MetService is predicting that temperatures will rise back to the mid-20s for Christchurch and Dunedin next week.
