Tauranga City Council, Bella Vista owners reach settlement after 14 hour discussion

Resident Sarsha Tyrell says the council's offer to buy the homes for what the owners paid is not fair and just.

Tauranga City Council has announced today they have reached a settlement by negotiation with the owners of properties in the Bella Vista development which will see the council take ownership of the properties.

The council said in a press release today that the terms of the settlement are confidential "but the parties have worked constructively in reaching this resolution that enables the owners to move on from Bella Vista".

1 NEWS understands council staff and Bella Vista residents were in discussion for 14 hours and by 10:30pm they'd reached an agreement.

Sarsha Tyrrell says the last three months have been "exhausting" for her and her two-year-old daughter.

The 21 homeowners in the subdivision were served with eviction notices in March as the homes were deemed too dangerous to live in after issues with construction and inspections.

The Tauranga City Council’s compensation was originally turned down by homeowners, following an independent review which led to court proceedings.

Owner Ron McDiarmid told 1 NEWS he's "happy" with the settlement.

He says says he can now "move on" with his life.
