Weather forecasters are keeping an eye on Tropical Cyclone Oma in the Pacific, but another storm moving from the south is expected to bring wild weather to parts of New Zealnad early next week.
Heavy rain, strong wind, low temperatures and even snow is forecast for some places, as early as Sunday.
NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll said Tropical Cyclone Oma was not out of the question, with experts keeping an eye on its developments, but it seemed to be tracking towards Queensland, Australia. However, another weather system moving from the south looked to bring "impactful" weather.
The east side of the South Island and lower North Island were looking to see the worst weather, Mr Noll said. Temperatures in the South Island would be pushing to reach 15C.
"It's looking a lot colder. There may even be snow in high elevations of the South Island," he said. "It's going to be a taste of autumn or a taste of early winter in some parts of New Zealand."
His advice was to "bring out the jumpers", but also keep an eye on weather warnings. Hard, dry soil could mean flooding for some areas because rain won't be easily absorbed into the ground.
The worst of the storm is expected to be felt on Sunday and Monday.
Metservice put out a statement that the forecast rain was expected to bring the wettest week of the year so far.
"At this stage there is still some uncertainty across the weather model outputs regarding where [tropical Cyclone] Oma will move so there is no definitive answer on its exact path at this point," MetService meteorologist Mark Bowe said in a statement.
"But what we can be certain about is regardless of where TC Oma tracks, New Zealand we will still see some rain this weekend."
MetService has a Severe Weather Warning is in place for Fiordland, Westland south of Fox Glacier and the Otago Headwaters until Wednesday morning.
