A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has shaken Taranaki this afternoon.

The quake struck 35km north of New Plymouth at a depth of 10km, according to GeoNet, which described the shaking as moderate.

Several twitter users in the area reported shaking.

The shake comes after the lower North Island was twice hit by quakes over 5.0 earlier this week.
