Talks prove to be complex and messy with no guarantee of decision today, says Corin Dann

Winston Peters said today the party had made lots of progress on policy, but needs to speak with Labour and National once again.

There is no guarantee we will have any idea of who will form the next government by the end of today, as talks prove to be complex and messy, according to 1 NEWS political editor Corin Dann.

After another day slipped by yesterday with no firm decision coming from Winston Peters and the NZ First camp, the wait to find out the make-up of the next government is dragging on longer than anyone expected.

"Both Labour and National are standing by ready to have talks and will stay in Wellington so they'll be ready to go and Winston Peters says when he has had those talks he will move with urgency and won’t have to call another board meeting.

"But there are still many moving parts to this, for example Labour, National and the Greens have to get their caucus and board approvals in as well," Dann said.

Dann says the fact that National, Labour and the Greens will still have to meet with their respective boards and caucus means we may yet have another day or two to wait for a final decision.
