Even in death, kapa haka star's ‘Smear Your Mea’ campaign making a difference

February 15, 2019

The ‘Smear Your Mea’ campaign has been incredibly successful amongst Māori.

A band of cyclists have set off today on an emotional ride from Rotorua to Wellington to promote the popular health campaign Smear Your Mea.

Launched by Talei Morrison before she lost her battle with cervical cancer last year, the message has grown to become arguably one of the most successful Māori health campaigns ever.

It’s a meaningful journey for Ms Morrison’s friends and family who are taking the message on the road.

“Us men, we've got to look after our women and encourage our women to go get their smears, and us men have also got to go and get our prostates checked,” said former MP Te Ururoa Flavell.

A band of cyclists have set off on an emotional ride to promote the popular kapa haka performer’s health campaign.

The cyclists aim to arrive in Wellington in time for the national kapa haka festival Te Matatini.

Ms Morrison was one of New Zealands' best-known performers, and the cyclists hope to spread her message throughout the event.

"She had everything, beautiful, another level, the god of war, the god of peace it all came out in Talei, even to her last breath," said kapa haka tutor Wetini Mitai.
