Sydney's wild 'once in a century' storm heading to New Zealand, bringing widespread rain

TVNZ weather presenter Dan Corbett gives the latest update.

The wild 'once in a century' storm that lashed Sydney this week is on its way to New Zealand, albeit with less intensity.

It’s the biggest rain downpour Sydney’s seen in more than three decades.

Meteorologist Angus Hines from MetService told 1 NEWS most parts of the country are expected to get heavy rains but not to the same intensity as Australia.

"This weather system would have evolved by the time it reaches New Zealand.  It will not affect New Zealand to the same intensity that it has affected Sydney... ...but it will still be bringing significant wet weather onto the country."

Hines says the heavy rains are expected from tomorrow and will last until Sunday.

"It's expected to be a wet day right throughout Saturday.  Sunday will also be a wet day but there are more localised showers, whereas Saturday is looking like more widespread rain across the region."

He said Northland, Auckland, northern parts of Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty should expect rain, with the heaviest areas being parts of the Bay of Plenty, parts of Nelson and the top of the South Island.

MetService say it is too early to put weather watches and warnings in place, but encourages people to keep an eye on the website.
