A Sydney surfer has died after being swept up in large swells and slammed into a storm water drain.

The 44-year-old man was pulled unconscious from Collaroy Beach in Sydney's north yesterday.

The man was pulled from the water by an off-duty lifeguard, who attempted to give him CPR.

He was taken to the Royal North Shore Hospital, but later died.

Torrential rain in the New South Wales has forced some residents on the south coast to evacuate their homes.
