Sustainability has been well and truly highlighted at the Luma Southern light project in Queenstown.

Local primary and secondary school students have created illuminated art installations for the festival using only recycled materials - including sewage pipes.

Their work is being displayed alongside local and international artists over the long weekend.

Thousands of visitors are expected to enjoy the sights but they'll need to rug up, with evening temperatures of just 3 or 4 degrees forecast.
