Surge of Auckland police officers on the beat is paying off

February 11, 2018

Eighty future officers have headed to police college, the largest Auckland only wing in 40 years.

Today marked a momentous occasion as 80 police recruits headed off to police college in Porirua from Auckland - the largest Auckland only wing of trainees in forty years.

All of them will return to Auckland after 16 weeks of training.

"Whats unusual is doing eighty from Auckland, for Auckland, being trained to come back into our communities" says Superintendent Tusha Penny, Waitemata District Commander.

Auckland has had critically low numbers of police presence because of the cost of living.

This is the first group of the 1800 officers promised over the next three years with a strong focus on getting officer numbers up in Auckland where 40 percent of police are based.

Their latest viral recruitment video has done wonders with applications upwards of 370 a week, compared to the 520 a month they were receiving before it.
