Sudden death of Napier man possibly linked to synthetics - police

August 17, 2018
It comes as the Government debates how to tackle the growing problem.

Police say the sudden death of a man in Maraenui, Napier was possibly caused by synthetic substance use.

The news comes as police charged three men, aged 23, 44 and 53, with possession and supply of synthetic material following search warrants executed in Napier on Monday.

A 55-year-old man died suddenly on Wednesday afternoon. Police say there is a possibility the death is linked to the use of a non-approved psychoactive substance, commonly known as synthetic drugs or "syns".

The death has been referred to the Coroner, who will ultimately rule on the cause of death.

Police say further charges are being considered against the men arrested in the raids.

The 23 and 44-year-old men will next appear in the Napier District Court on Wednesday 29 August.

The 53-year-old-man was remanded in custody and will next appear in Napier District Court on Monday 27 September.
