Stranded orca saved after volunteers and army work tirelessly in dramatic rescue

November 13, 2017

An orca has been re-floated after being stranded on the shore of a beach in Seddon, near Blenheim since yesterday.

The orca was washed up on Marfells beach just after 11.30am.

The NZ Army is pitching in to help with the rescue at Marfell's Beach.

A large trench was dug in front of the stranded orca to help bring water to the mammal before high tide.

Depart of Conservation staff, Project Jonah volunteers and locals banded together and worked on the shore overnight to keep the beached orca alive.

This morning, 25 New Zealand, American, Canadian and Australian army personnel helped in rescue efforts.

A post on Project Jonah's Facebook page, announced the success of the rescue effort this afternoon.

"We are thrilled to report that the refloat this afternoon was a success and the orca is now swimming freely in deeper water!!

"A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in the last 24 hours," the post stated.
