It's one of only five in the world.

Stewart Island has been officially recognised as a dark sky sanctuary, one of only five in the world.

It becomes just the second island sanctuary on the globe, alongside New Zealand's Great Barrier Island.

The other dark sky sanctuaries are in the US and Chile.

It's hoped the achievement will bring a significant increase in tourism and employment to Stewart Island.
