Just two weeks ago, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the Government's housing plans, saying he hoped it'd be a better winter for people this year than it was last year.

There are also nearly 500 more people on the social housing register than in March.

At the same time, the Government is spending nearly $140,000 a day putting people up in emergency accommodation such as motels.

Social Housing Minister Amy Adams says winter is seeing an increase in the number of people needing support.

"Our primary focus is getting help to those who need it, and while demand has increased, help is there for those who need it," Mrs Adams says.

More than 3000 families and individuals have been helped with a Special Needs Grant for emergency housing – 500 more than last quarter.

Labour's housing spokesman Phil Twyford says the figures are yet another sign the Government has failed to address the housing crisis.
