Motorists have been urged to avoid State Highway 5, after a serious accident this afternoon has caused to road to be closed between Taupō and Napier.
No detours have been put in place.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 12pm, after two vehicles crashed at the highway's intersection with Pohokura Road.
Helicopters have been dispatched and the Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
Motorists already on State Highway 5 can expect significant delays.
