The biggest names in New Zealand music are gracing the red carpet ahead of the industry's biggest night of the year.

Songstress Lizzie Marvelly poses with singer Massad and TV host Erin Simpson.

It's expected the 49th Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards will be dominated by international pop sensation Lorde, who is nominated for Album of the Year, Best Female Solo Artist, Best Pop Album and People's Choice Award.

Brother and sister duo Broods are up for a number of awards tonight after gaining traction overseas over the last year.

"There are so many people that we look up to in the New Zealand music industry, and so many people we want to gain their respect," says Georgia Nott.

Other well-known artists up for nominations include Ladi6, The Naked and Famous, Liam Finn, Stan Walker, House of Shem and Bulletproof.

The evening, which is hosted by Shannon Ryan and Dai Henwood, will see live performances by Benny Tipene, Blacklistt, Broods, David Dallas, Sol3 Mio, and Tiny Ruins.

There is also a special tribute to this year's Legacy Award recipient - Supergroove.

The event began at 6pm at Vector Arena.
