Speed and alcohol suspected in serious Marlborough crash

Two people were seriously injured after a vehicle travelling down the Awatere Valley in Marlborough left the road early this morning

Four people from Kaikoura were in the vehicle whcih rolled down a bank several times before coming to rest in a paddock just before 5.30am.

A 23-year-old woman with serious spinal and internal injuries and a 20-year-old man with severe leg fractures were airlifted to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac and Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopters.

A 22-year-old female passenger and 20-year-old male passenger were taken by ambulance to Wairau Hospital where there injuries are described as minor.

The serious crash unit is investigating the accident but initial indications point towards speed and alcohol as contributing factors.
