South still gripped by icy conditions, Christchurch motorists warned to take care

April 11, 2018

Motorists in Christchurch are being urged to take extreme care on the roads this morning as torrential rain, hail and sleet batters the city.

MetService say most temperatures across Canterbury will remain in single digits, and with the wind chill factor will feel more like  -5 in exposed areas.

A MetService spokesperson said while temperatures continue to dip for most of the South Island, the snow showers have eased or stopped in most places.

However sleet showers and rain are still being forecast over the next couple of days as the southerly front hangs around.

The Alpine passes are still covered in snow, as are Waiau/Mt Lyford, Hanmer and areas above 400m throughout mid Canterbury.

Dunedin and Central Otago could today see the worst of the cold snap.

The Crown Range has had a dusting of snow overnight and with black ice motorists are being urged to go via SH6 and the Kawarau Gorge instead.

Road closures/warnings this morning:
Warnings remain in place for all the alpine passes – Lewis, Arthurs, Porters, Haast, Lindis
Warning for Crown Range Road
Warning for Milford Road
Warning for Dunedin to Waitati Highway
Warning for SH80 Ben Ohau to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park
Warning for SH77 Methven to Rakaia Gorge
