'Someone's gotta stand up and make a point' – Christchurch man hijacks awards over ongoing quake insurance claims

November 17, 2017

Jerry Larason accused Vero of deceit and needlessly delaying claims.

The insurance industry's annual gala dinner in Auckland last night was interrupted when a man dressed in prison clothing jumped on stage in protest over his unresolved claim from the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

Christchurch man, Jerry Larason, accused insurance company Vero of deceit and needlessly delaying claims dating back seven years.

“The only way to really affect them is to just become as much a pain to them as they are to you,” Larason said.

According to Larason, as many as 40 others are still waiting for Vero to settle their claims almost seven years after the Christchurch earthquakes.

“I just feel someone's gotta stand up and make a point that a lot of us are in Vero prison.”

Last night, he took his grievance to the insurance industry's annual awards night.

His aim was to get up on stage when Vero won an award and publicly shame them. Vero did not win any awards but Larason got on stage with a megaphone.

“When it finished I went up on stage and just basically touted off that Vero insurance was really just a bunch of bullies.”

Earlier this year, Larason set up a protest outside Vero’s Christchurch office.

He was invited to meet Vero bosses following his on-stage protest this morning.

Larason said they're trying to get him to settle.

“I don't really want to take a settlement. Just take care of me.”

Vero says it's been working on finalising a settlement offer with Larason for more than a year.
