Some residents claim dust from Tauranga industrial area is affecting their health

The regional council is adding to its air monitoring technology to get a better idea of what’s going on.

Some Bay of Plenty residents say their health is being affected by dust near an industrial area in Tauranga.

As a result, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council has installed nearly a dozen air monitoring units to record dust levels, including finer particles.

The data is streamed and collated in Auckland.

"It's looking at the sources where it may be coming from, we are in quite a complex area. We've got a lot going on the mount," BOP Regional Council's Stephen Mallor told 1 NEWS.

The Port of Tauranga says it imposes strict rules on operators to prevent air and water pollution.

The Regional Council has invested $500,000 a year for the next three years to improve monitoring.

They say the results will be shared with the community early next year.
