There was a sombre sight at Christchurch Airport today, with a large number of Air New Zealand planes sitting idle.

The national carrier has grounded much of its fleet due to the Covid-19 level four lockdown, with most domestic and international travel shut down.

The airline will still operate freight flights, as the number of people returning to the country becomes a trickle.

It has indicated it may shed up to 30 per cent of its workforce due to the dramatic downturn.
