Police say the man killed this morning in the remote Ruahine Ranges in Central Hawke's Bay was a 25-year-old soldier from Linton Military Camp.
It’s understood the man was hunting with two friends and a dog in rugged bush, when he was accidentally shot by another hunter who was with another hunting party.
The dog was also injured in the incident but is still alive.
The man’s body will remain in the bush overnight with one of his friends.
A scene examination has begun and will continue tomorrow.
Police are talking to a man who was involved in the shooting, as well as the dead man’s companions.
Police are concerned as weather conditions in the region worsen.
Communication with their team and the hunters has been difficult due to the remote location of the accident.
This is the second fatal hunting accident this month.
Cromwell man Gary Tall was killed on March 3 in a hunting accident on the Old Woman Range.
