Smoke billows into sky as fire consumes building in rural Waikato

Fire crews are responding to a large building on fire in Waikato. 

The blaze is located on Paterangi Road in Te Awamutu at the Waipa District Council's kerb side recycling contractor.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1 NEWS the structure is 30 x 10 metres and more than half of it was on fire. 

There were reports of a rubbish pile adjacent to the building also involved in flames.

The coucnicl says the situation is now under control and no one was injured.

"The cause of the fire and extent of any damage is unknown at this point however, an investigation will be carried out in the coming days.

"Our contractor has confirmed there will be no disruption to the recycling service in Waipa."

Crews were called to the scene at 11.55am today. At least five fire engines attended the scene.
