Small landslides caused by 'strong' 5.4 earthquake near Kaikoura

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake has caused a few small landslides near Kaikōura. 

Kaikōura District Council earthquake recovery manager Danny Smith told 1 NEWS the earthquake wasn't long but is a reminder the town can still get them. 

He said there were a few small landslides in the valley.

High winds in the area created dust to rise from the hills.

The quake was 10 kilometres west of Kaikoura.

The strong quake struck at 5.10pm today according to GeoNet. 

A worker at BP told 1 NEWS he can see dust rising from the hills, other than that there is no damage.

The earthquake was 13km deep and over 1300 people have reported feeling it on GeoNet so far.
