Sixty Auckland bus drivers to strike this morning

April 19, 2018
The move comes in response to Auckland Transport's plans to get rid of permanent on-board train crews.

About 60 drivers from Auckland bus company Pavlovich Coachlines will strike for two hours this morning over pay and conditions, but a planned strike by NZ Bus drivers has been cancelled.

Pavlovich Coachlines will strike between 7am and 9am by picketing at their workplace in Mount Roskill, Auckland.

First Union last night said the NZ Bus strike at the Onehunga depot is cancelled, and the rest of NZ Bus strikes are pending negotiations.

First Union organiser Graham McKean says Auckland bus drivers want an alternative to the Public Transport Operating Model - a council tendering process that the union says has worn down driver pay and work conditions.

Mr McKean said Pavlovich has many of Auckland Transport's contracts because it is one of the lowest payers in the industry.

"There's a reason they have all the work, they pay bottom dollar. They're dragging the whole industry down," he said.

"Many of these employees have been driving for decades and they have the responsibility of the wellbeing of hundreds of people a day on their shoulders. Pay them what they're worth."

Drivers from Auckland bus company NZ Bus have also been holding strikes this week, with the first held on Tuesday at the Swanson depot.
